Pause the game and the original show’s narrator, Peter Cullen (Optimus Prime), will say “ Voltron will be back after these messages.” Unpause and you’re greeted with “Now, back to Voltron.” That sort of dedication is shown throughout the game. It shows in even the smallest of nuances. It’s a novel way of sharing the gameplay of one character without making it overly complex.įan service – Clearly the developers have a love for the franchise. During Voltron sequences each player gets a turn performing attacks. But the real gem is here is the hybrid offline/online co-op for up to five players–something that no other twin-stick shooter. The controls are tight and responsive, the enemy AI fitting for the genre, and the visuals presented in a beautiful, stylized manner. The Voltron stages are presented as a turn-based/quick time event hybrid.Ī compotent game – Above all else, Voltron: DotU is a capable and solid game. Melee attacks can be performed with the right bumper, and the left trigger powers a given lion’s special attack. Primary cannons are controlled with the right thumbstick, while the right trigger is used to pounce. Players are given control of one of the five Voltron lions, each with a unique special attack and stats. Voltron: Defender of the Universe is primarily a twin-stick shooter.
#VOLTRON DEFENDER OF THE UNIVERSE GAME REVIEW SERIES#
The original series is available for streaming on Netflix, a 2011 resurrection of the series, entitled Voltron Force currently airs on television, and Voltron has finally graced current-gen consoles in the form of Defender of the Universe. It was beloved by so many children of that decade, and it’s been the subject of a comeback in the last few years. It comes as no surprise, then that the 1980’s anime Voltron would get similar treatment. Companies are looking back to their roots, resurrecting franchises, and bringing them to new and old audiences alike. It’s a trend in not only Hollywood, but also in the game industry across the world. The countdown for January has already begun, and we have plenty of time to analyze and decode Voltron: Legendary Defender.Voltron: Defender of the Universe was developed by Behaviour Interactive and published by THQ. With this opening the door, backstories and character histories are more viable than ever. Prediction 3: The fandom rejoiced when the popular theory of Lance being Latino was announced to be true (he’s Cuban). It’s more than likely she’ll uncover some sort of secret about them. It’s already been confirmed that Pidge’s mission to find her family remains an important part of her character, but it makes little sense for her to find them in only the second season. Prediction 2: Pidge will learn something about her family. Given this and his absence from discussions with the show’s crew, it’s almost guaranteed some sort of tragedy will befall the oldest Paladin. Takashi Shirogane has been the subject of a lot of debates, ever since the second season trailer first dropped and featured him asking Keith to lead Voltron if something were to happen to him. Prediction 1: Something will happen to Shiro. Why am I telling you all of this? Well, the second season has been announced for January 20, 2017! An episode has premiered at New York Comic Con, and hype is at an all-time high. (It’s made partially by the company behind the Avatar: The Last Airbender.) The animation is also top notch, using both CGI and a more anime-inspired style. There is a mix of action sequences and humor, but there is a surprising amount of depth to each character as well as plenty of heartbreaking moments. Without a stable relationship, Voltron cannot form. Along the way, they must put aside their differences. They are guided by Princess Allura from the planet of Altea, and work to stop the evil Galra from taking over the universe. The series follows Shiro, Lance, Pidge, Keith and Hunk: five humans taken from Earth and informed that they are the chosen “Paladins of Voltron” which is a massive robot built out of five individual robotic lions. It features the voices of Steven Yuen (Glenn Rhee on The Walking Dead), Jeremy Shada (Finn on Adventure Time), and Kimberly Brooks (Ashley Williams in the Mass Effect games).

It premiered on June 10, 2016, with all eleven episodes available for streaming. Voltron: Legendary Defender is a Dreamworks/Netflix collaboration, bringing back the 1984 series Voltron: Defender of the Universe.

With all of the above having been rebooted to varying degrees of success, it only made sense that the Paladins and their lions would return as well. Anything was viable for a cartoon series: talking kung-fu fighting amphibians, shirtless men brandishing swords and even a woman who could transform into a pop star decades before Hannah Montana. The 80s was a strange time in television.
